Tips for the Festive Season

With the festive season upon us, it is time to consider not only how our poor waist lines and livers are holding up, but also our lower backs and feet. The latter two seem to be the forgotten heroes of the season, putting up with the many hours of high heel wearing that one has to partake in to get through this time of year. High heels may look glamorous however your improved image may come at a cost.

As you are standing contemplating the canapés, there is a chance that your calves are shortening, the arches in your feet are flattening and you are placing pressure on areas of your feet that are not designed to take such weight. This pain is a sign that your feet are not happy jammed into your beautiful yet impractical shoes.
That twinge you feel in your lower back as you reach over the bar to get another glass of Sav Blanc is your body’s way of rejecting your lovely heels too. They place your low back into an extended position, making it vulnerable to injury and locking up.
These postural changes may be fine for those that have perfect body mechanics however, for most of us, we have areas of weakness. The introduction of 2 inch heels may just push us over the edge. I am not saying that you should stop wearing heels, but take precautions. Wear lower heels if you are not used to wearing them, walk tall and be posture conscious, take some time out and sit whilst wearing them and most importantly, manage your known troublesome areas correctly.

Osteopathic treatment aims to restore function within the body and can benefit all of us who have poor body mechanics. Often your troublesome areas are the first to fail with the introduction of imbalances, like your high heels. Disaster can be avoided by correctly managing your year long niggles, and all that may be required is the occasional osteopathic maintenance treatment.

Should you be due for a general osteopathic maintenance treatment, please make an appointment with Dr Lisa Brennan at Vitalelife Paddington on 3367 1950, to enable you to get through this festive season.

Lisa Brennan – Osteopath

About Lisa

Lisa is a registered osteopath having completed a Bachelor of Applied Science and a Masters of Osteopathy at RMIT University. Originally from Victoria, Lisa moved up to sunny Brisbane in January 2010 and currently practices at Paddington Osteopathic Clinic which operates out of Vitalelife Paddington.

Lisa has experience treating people of all ages, from newborns with colic, to adults with postural issues associated with work. She has a particular interest in treating pregnant women and helping them through what can sometimes be an incredibly uncomfortable 9 months.

Lisa has completed postgraduate studies in Osteopathy in the Cranial Field with the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation. She also has extensive sports and rehabilitation training, working as a trainer for a local AFL football club for two years.

Lisa tailors her treatments to each patient and utilises a combination of the more direct structural techniques combined with the gentler OCF techniques to achieve the most effective treatment. She treats each patient with empathy and understanding and believes education is the key to better health.

What is Osteopathy?

The osteopathic philosophy differentiates osteopathy from other manual medicine treatments in that osteopaths treat the body holistically; we look at the body as a whole, not just the area where you are experiencing pain or discomfort.

We believe that the body’s structure is inherently related to its function so when your joints, muscles or nerves are not operating properly, your health is compromised. Osteopaths encourage the body’s natural ability to heal itself by restoring functionality and in doing this, help the body return to health and wellness.

What happens during a session?

During your first consultation at Paddington Osteopathic Clinic, Lisa will enquire the reason for your visit and take a full medical history. An osteopathic and orthopaedic examination will follow to aid her diagnosis.  She will then discuss the diagnosis, why it may have occurred and what treatment and management is necessary for resolution.

Following your osteopathic treatment, she may make recommendations such as stretches and postural advice to aid your recovery and prevent recurrence. If further tests are warranted, Lisa may refer you directly, or may refer you to your general practitioner, for further investigations such as scans or blood tests.

Often Lisa may ask you to remove items of your clothing to allow her to have a better understanding of your body to aid diagnosis and treatment. A gown will always be offered, however, you are welcome to bring loose fitting pants/shorts if this will make you feel more comfortable.  Any past imaging or scans should be brought for the initial consultation.

Osteopathic treatment is gentle, safe and effective. There are two main categories of techniques utilised by osteopaths; direct and indirect – both of which are practised by Lisa.

Direct techniques utilise a level of force in the application. Examples of such techniques are massage, joint articulation, muscle activation, joint manipulation and stretching.

Indirect techniques are when the osteopath works with the body to guide it to freedom of restriction. As a result, this mode of treatment is excellent for children, the elderly and chronic pain. Indirect techniques include fascial unwinding, counter-strain, functional technique and Osteopathy in the Cranial Field.

An initial consultation will be approximately 45 minutes, with all follow up appointments lasting approximately 30 minutes. Prior to your initial appointment we recommend arriving 5 minutes early to fill out the appropriate paperwork.
