Perfect Posture

by Alicia Ruutz – Exercise Physiologist

Ideal posture is the position of the joints from which the body functions most efficiently.  To achieve proper posture we need balanced muscular strength and adequate joint flexibility.

Poor posture can lead to stress on the body’s bones, joints, ligaments and muscles.  Ideal posture can assist with injury prevention, improve sports performance and even enhance aesthetic appearance.

Now let’s look at the body’s optimal posture and alignment from head to toe.

Head positioning:  Ideally the head should be in line with the spine. Many people will have a forward head position or “poked neck”. Overtime this can put a strain in the upper back and neck muscles and can lead to muscle tension and headaches.

Shoulder positioning: With many activities of daily life, such as leaning over at work, studying at the computer and continual sitting at the desk, many people will be found to have a hunched posture, with rounded shoulders and tight chest muscles. Optimally, the shoulders should be down and away from the ears with shoulder blades gently squeezed together.

Pelvic positioning: Excessive forward tilting of the pelvis, where the bottom sticks out, can lead to lower back pain. There is generally tightness in the back and hip muscles and weakness in the abdominal muscles.  Excessive backward tilting of the pelvis, where the bottom is tucked under, can create a flat back where there is the loss of the natural curve in the lower spine. This can produce a stiff and sore back, tight hamstrings and weakness in the bottom and abdominals. Ideally we should have a neutral spine, where there is no excessive tilting in either direction and we can maintain a natural curve.

Pilates exercise aims to strengthen, rebalance and lengthen the muscles and realign the body. Pilates teaches the individual about their body positioning, encourages greater awareness of ideal posture and how to re correct. It is important to be aware of our posture at work, home and play to reduce the stresses on our body and to achieve better functioning in life. If you would like to find out more about ideal posture and Pilates exercises that will assist with re correction or an assessment to identify how ideal your posture is, please see one of our exercise physiologists for further information.

About Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiologists differ from personal trainers in that they have the qualifications to work with people sustaining injuries and suffering different illnesses rather than just the ‘healthy’ population. Exercise physiologists also differ from physiotherapists in that they do not diagnose these injuries or illnesses. Exercise physiologists usually work in conjunction with physiotherapists, often following on after rehabilitation.

What happens during a session?

Clients receive a health questionnaire and interview to establish and record a general history with a view to determine the risks of exercise (if any) for the individual. An evaluation of the patient is then done to assess heart rates, functional ranges and restrictions of the affected areas, postural analysis and biomechanical assessment. Generally the initial consult is 45min to an hour. A rehabilitative programme is then designed for the individual according to the findings and facilitated in a separate 45 – 1hour session. It is recommended that a treatment pack of 5 sessions is completed as this allows for optimal time for recovery improvement, facilitation and education of the patient. Once off sessions are available but due to the nature of rehabilitation are not recommended. Special considerations however will be taken into account.

Roxanne’s Personal Moto: “It’s all in the attitude”

Testimonials

“I have crush fractures in my spine due to osteoporosis and was advised by my Doctor to do some rehabilitation exercise, which I did with Roxy Davies. I found her to be very knowledgeable and encouraging. She even modified exercises for me to do that would suit my ability and mobility. After a few sessions with Roxy, my remedial massage therapist commented that she had never seen me as straight, or my muscles in as good condition as they were now. I can now do simple tasks around the house, like hanging the washing on the line, relatively pain free. Before seeing Roxy, I found even the simple tasks aggravated my pain levels. Roxy also worked out a “home plan” of exercises that I could do at home without spending money purchasing  gym machinery or weights. Roxy is a great motivator and has a gentle, but firm, encouraging manner. I would recommend her to anyone who needs the help of an Exercise Physiologist/Biokineticist.

Karen Cronje
Brisbane QLD

“Six months prior to a major tennis tournament I commenced regular visits to Roxy in order to increase my strength, improve stamina, and develop greater flexibility. These issues were hampering my progress, and posing obstacles to me achieving my goal, i.e. to be in the top 200 in the ITF world rankings.  At the age of 51, I realized that I needed the help of someone who understood both the physiological composition of the body and the specific requirements of the sport that I love. From the outset Roxy treated me holistically, where certain old injuries e.g. lower back and resulting tight glutes, were deftly rehabilitated.  I regard the development of a highly customised series of on-court exercises in tandem with efficient hands-on treatment of musculoskeletal issues to be the hallmark of what Roxy is able to do in her biokinetic capacity.  I regard Roxy to be an expert in her field, and a total professional evidenced by her willingness to attend my tournament venue in order to address an injury sustained in the early rounds.  Roxy Davies helped me reach my goal and I recommend her services wholeheartedly.”
